Chembra
Peak
Located at an altitude of 2100 m
in Western Ghats, the spectacular Chembra Peak is a mountain peak situated near
Meppadi in Wayanad district of Kerala. Being as the tallest peak in Wayanad
& the 3rd highest in South India, the Chembra Peak is an ideal place for
trekking in Wayanad and also one of the top Wayanad Tourist Places. With a
heart shaped lake en route, Chembra Peak trek is a challenging task and
suitable for experienced trekkers. The scenic beauty of Wayanad, which is
visible from the top of Chembra, is very exciting.
The trek starts from the
watchtower at the foot of Chembra Peak which is about 7 km from Meppadi town
and the peak is about 4 km one way and takes about 2 hours to trek. The trek
entry point can be reached by jeeps from Meppadi town and visitors can get the
permission from the entry gate itself.
Camping is not allowed on Chembra Peak. The best time to trek the
Chembra Peak is from November to February. This trek makes it most memorable Wayanad trip.
Pakshipathalam
Situated at an altitude of 1740
m, Pakshipathalam is an eco-tourist spot in the Brahmagiri hills of Wayanad. It
is an abode of large population of several species of birds and also one of the
best places for trekking in Wayanad. Pakshipathalam is one among the
challenging trekking spots for adventurous tourists. It can be accessed only by
8 km trekking (one way), which starts from Thirunelly Temple and it take 4
hours.
Trekking to this avian haunt
takes one through the scenic Brahmagiri Hills, moist deciduous forests, deep
caves, slippery trails, and narrow rocky caves. With stunningly beautiful
surroundings, the Pakshipathalam trek offers some of the most spectacular
views. One can also explore some caves during Pakshipathalam trek. Night camping is not allowed on the peak, so
visitors need to come back before sunset. The best time to visit Pakshipathalam
is from November to April.
Thusharagiri
Waterfalls
Thusharagiri Falls is a
breathtaking waterfall located in Kerala and among the well-known Wayanad
tourist places, especially visited in monsoon. There are around 3 waterfalls in
Thusharagiri. Dropping from a height of 75 m, Thenpara Fall is the highest of
the three waterfalls. Popularly known as the 'trekker's paradise', Thusharagiri
offers challenging trekking and is one of most popular trekking places in
Wayanad.
Especially known for its exciting
8 km trek, it is an ideal destination for nature lovers and adventure
enthusiasts. The 2- 3 hours trek through the rubber, areca nut and spice
plantations is exhilarating one. The first waterfall can be reached easily
while the remaining two falls can be reached from the first one by trekking
through thick forest. The best time to trek this place is from September to
February.
Banasura
Hills
Banasura Hill is another popular trekking
place in Wayanad. Situated at an elevation of 6,801 feet above sea level,
Banasura Hill is the second highest mountain in Wayanad and also one of the top
tourist places in Wayanad. With steep slopes, knee high weeds and rocks
blocking the path, Banasura hill trek is quite mystic and a bit difficult trek
of about 12 km. From the top, one can get an amazing sight of the Banasura
Sagar Dam and the misty peaks of the surrounding hills. It can be combined with
a visit to Banasura Sagar Dam which offers scenic beauty with enthralling speed
boating facility. The best season for Banasura hill trek is from October to
May.
